Hierarchically assembled magnetic colloids with nano-linker coupling for high-performance magnetic actuation systems and improved stability
Source abstract
Abstract
Magneto-mechanical systems rely heavily on magnetic suspensions to achieve dynamic control, precise actuation, and intelligent damping across advanced engineering applications. However, traditional magnetic suspensions (TMS) suffer from rapid sedimentation, narrow viscoelastic tunability, and structural fragility under shear, restricting their operational bandwidth. Therefore, we report a hierarchically assembled magnetic polymer composite suspensions (MPCS) — a multi-scale magnetic colloid in which polyaniline-coated Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) acts as bridging agents, dynamically coupling Fe microparticles into field-induced networks. This architecture enhances the balance between dipolar interactions and hydrodynamic stresses, enabling superior magneto-mechanical performance. MPCS exhibits ∼ 42.8% higher sedimentation stability, with 53% settling in 16 minutes compared to TMS. Under magnetic sweep testing, the yield stress at 105 kA/m, increased from 1999 Pa (TMS) to 3460 Pa in MPCS (∼73% enhancement), while viscosity rises by ∼70%. The critical Mason number (Mn*) increased from 1.05 to 1.52, indicating greater structural persistence against shear-induced disruption. Dynamic viscoelastic measurements reveal a broadened viscoelastic regime ( ≈ 0.001%), beyond which strain-softening dominated. MPCS exhibits significantly enhanced field-driven viscoelastic tunability values (141% at 105 kA/m and 255% at 123 kA/m) compared to TMS (108% and 149%). The crossover strain defined by G' and G", shifted upward by ∼79% (0.280% vs 0.156%) at 105 kA/m and by ∼45% (0.541% vs 0.372%) at 123 kA/m, reflecting delayed yielding and improved structural resilience. Overall, NP-mediated coupling enables a tunable, robust magneto-mechanical framework suited for high-frequency damping, vibration isolation, and precision actuation.
