Abstract

Twelve samples of different compositions were produced by arc-melting, and studied in the as-cast state, and after annealing at 650, and 1000 °C, for 1000 h. All samples were analysed in an SEM with EDX spectroscopy to derive the microstructures and to determine the overall and phase compositions, and by XRD to derive the crystal structures. The as-cast microstructures mainly showed cored A1 (γFe,αCo,Pd), except for of three samples which showed A1 (γFe,αCo,Pd) + (αFe) and A1 (γFe,αCo,Pd) + ~ FePd3. Some of the phases were too fine to be analysed accurately, and some microstructures did not coarsen on annealing. Coring occurred in some samples, and remained to a lesser extent after annealing. The 1000 °C isothermal section was drawn and the system comprised mainly A1 (γFe,αCo,Pd). A miscibility gap in A1 (γFe,αCo,Pd) was identified in the 650 °C isothermal section, because there were two discrete phases, two sets of A1 peaks, and higher hardnesses. The hardness of the alloys increased with increased Fe and decreased Pd, samples with higher Co contents also had lower hardnesses, and there was a peak in the hardness at Co20:Fe60:Pd20 (at.%) in all conditions.
